Hi, my name is David! And I'm a full-time indie game developer, which is crazy to me because I'm horrible at programming and I'm self-taught with art and design. I actually went to film school, which is where I fell in love with storytelling, but didn't learn too much about advanced computer engineering and AI systems (imagine that!).
A few years ago, a friend showed me a game engine called Unity, which is totally free. I messed around experimenting with tons of game prototypes, but I couldn't stick with one idea. It was very overwhelming, and I didn't even know where to start.
To add to the stress, I was working full-time, and getting ready for our first baby. I could only work on my projects at night when I was exhausted... but I kept coming back to it! Even though I would've just preferred to collapse on the bed and watch Breaking Bad.
I decided to stick with one project: a game I called "Home is Where One Starts." I put a lot of myself into this simple first-person, story-driven game, and I loved every second of it. Sure, I got stuck a lot, and I had to Google a million different things, but after 18 months, I had a finished game I could show the world.
That experience taught me so much, and it led to some nice bonus money! Nothing crazy, but I was able to buy my dream computer, and saved the rest for a future game project I could work on in the future.
Long story short, I kept learning and improving, I kept finding and using the free, hidden tools to help finish my games, and by 2020, I released my second game, The First Tree, on consoles, mobile, and Steam, and sold over 500,000 copies. I was finally able to quit my day job.
And that all started because I finished my first game! If I never would've committed to that first project, I never would've finished my second one.
Did you know 50% of self-proclaimed game developers have never released or finished a game? I'm convinced if developers stick with a project and take that leap of faith of launching it, it could unlock their game dev career. When I quit my day job, I wanted to help as many people as possible to launch their games, so I posted articles, spoke at the Game Developers Conference, answered thousands of emails... then decided I needed a better solution: a one-stop learning resource.
